Our customer in Newton Abbot contacted us to upgrade their electrical system to support a new electric vehicle charger, along with adding power and lighting to their detached garage. The existing supply wasn’t suitable for the new load, so we designed and delivered a complete solution to ensure everything was up to modern standards and EV-ready.
We started by replacing the property’s existing 6-way consumer unit with a new 14-way RCBO distribution board, complete with surge protection. This allowed safe connection of a new submain to feed the garage, while providing room for future expansion. All circuits were tested, certified, and issued with the appropriate certification. As the customer works from home, we coordinated the work carefully to minimise disruption and advised in advance about expected downtime.
The second stage involved installing 50 metres of 10mm SWA EV Ultra cable, running it up the front of the house, through the loft, and down to the rear garden. We carefully chased out the pathway beneath the gate, removed gravel along the boundary, and cut into the tarmac of the shared carpark to complete the cable route. Once the installation was complete, we reinstated all disturbed areas using cold-rolled tarmac and made good the concrete pathway.
New 14-way RCBO consumer unit with SPD
Submain supply to garage
Wiring of a double socket and internal LED light in the garage
Supply and installation of an Ohme 7kW EV Charger with smart hub and load management
All works completed in accordance with BS 7671:2018 18th Edition standards
To finish, we swapped the original 5m lead for a 10m EV charging cable, delivered directly to the customer’s home for collection. Once everything was live, we walked the customer through the Ohme app, which now allows them to monitor load usage, schedule charging, and manage smart tariffs directly from their phone.
A future-proof setup with safe, reliable power to the garage, smart EV charging, and a tidy finish. The customer now has full visibility of their EV charging and electricity use via the app, along with convenient power and lighting in the garage.
