Local Torquay PAT Testing Services From Datel Electrical

When did you last conduct a PAT test for your Torquay-based business or rental property? In the UK, it’s a legal requirement to test your commercial appliances at least once a year. Our Torquay electricians offer all commercial clients reliable and compliant local PAT testing services.

What Are Our Torquay PAT Testing Services?

PAT testing, otherwise known as portable appliance testing, is a test conducted by a certified and qualified electrician to check the competence and electrical safety of portable electrical appliances. Anything from printers to hairdryers, if it’s plugged into the mains electricity, it should be regularly checked to assure safety for both property and persons.

Our team of Torquay based electricians offer various PAT testing services, either with our team coming out to you and completing a full PAT test on all of your electrical equipment. Or, otherwise you’re welcome to bring your equipment to our Newton Abbot office, where we can complete the PAT test quickly and efficiently for you, there and then.

Whichever works best for you, our team of Torquay and Newton Abbot electricians, are on hand to make your PAT testing a quick and easy process.

Is A Torquay PAT Test A Legal Requirement?

In the UK, currently, PAT testing is not a legal requirement. However, all businesses and commercial premises in the UK must adhere to maintaining safe working practices and conditions, including safe electrical equipment. Ensuring your company’s electrical equipment is regularly tested by a qualified local electrician, will help your company adhere to those requirements.

At Datel Electrical, our team of commercial electricians offer a variety of electrical services, as well as PAT testing to ensure your Torquay business is fully safety-compliant.

What Would Fail A Torquay PAT Test?

When conducting a PAT test, appliances will be labelled as a pass or a fail. Appliances can fail a PAT test in many different ways, including:

  • Being unable to power on
The cable casing is cracked or damaged
  • The equipment has exposed parts, especially exposed electrical parts
  • It has incorrect components, such as a fuse
  • Noticeable wear or damage to the cable or the plug
  • The equipment fails to pass the earth resistance test, polarity test or insulation resistance check
  • The appliance has been recalled or is counterfeit

At Datel Electrical, our team of electricians may be able to help repair or replace certain electrical elements for your appliance.

How Is A Torquay PAT Test Completed?

A PAT test should only be carried out by a trained professional, ideally someone with previous experience in PAT testing and electrical experience.

Our team of highly qualified local Torquay PAT testers follow all Health & Safety Executive(HSE) guidance when it comes to the safety testing of all handheld electrical equipment and check all portable appliances using three steps: User checks, formal visual inspection and the PAT testing with a portable appliance tester.

Step 1 User Checks

All users of electrical equipment should have some basic knowledge and understanding of how the appliance should work and have the confidence to carry out basic checks before each use. Including looking for frayed wires, obvious signs of damage, as well as potential water or other risks and hazards.

If something is flagged at this stage, or the piece of equipment is due for a PAT test then further inspections by a team of qualified local PAT testers.

Step 2 Visual Inspection

Before your electrical equipment is tested, a visual inspection takes place. Which, according to HSE, can flag around 90% of problems when carried out by a highly-trained local electrician. For the visual inspection, it is crucial that the appliance is turned off and unplugged.

Your Datel Electrical electrician will then complete the visual inspection, checking for any signs of damage across the plug sockets, cables and the device itself.

Step 3 PAT Test

Once the visual inspection has been completed, your Datel Electrical electrician will test the appliance for earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance as well as a host of other things using the portable appliance tester.

The results of this test will then determine if your appliance will pass or fail. Failed electrical equipment must not be used and removed from the location immediately.
